Two more TBMs that will build tunnels for Sicily’s Palermo-Catania railway have passed their Factory Acceptance Test.

The two EPBMs will be deployed on Lot 3 Lercara-Caltanissetta Xirbi, which involves the detailed design and construction of 47km of new railway line, including 22km of tunnels.

Four of the five TBMs for Lot 3 have now completed testing.

Lot 3 is being undertaken by a consortium of Webuild, Ghella and Impresa Pizzarotti.

The Lercara-Caltanissetta Xirbi section is part of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana’s (RFI) wider programme to modernise the Palermo-Catania-Messina railway.
